Have you made this £9,742 mistake for your back pain?

Dear Reader

This week in the clinic, I found myself smiling because I heard something I hear almost every week.

"I've bought a new mattress."

"I've tried orthopaedic insoles."

"I've got one of those massage guns."

"I even changed my office chair."

Honestly, if I had £1 for every client who told me they'd bought a new mattress, ergonomic chair, pillow, insoles or massage gun in the hope it would fix their back pain... I'd probably be writing this newsletter from a beach somewhere.

Now, before anyone panics, I'm not here to tell you that you don't need a new mattress or pillow. You might and sometimes they can be incredibly helpful.

The problem is they're rarely the cause of your pain, so they're unlikely to resolve it.

The tricky thing about back pain...

Two people can have pain in exactly the same place for completely different reasons.

One person might need to stop running and take more time to rest and recover to relieve tension, while another I'll suggest needs to strengthen their core and focus on strength and stability.

A good mattress and pillow can help you feel more comfortable and get a better night's sleep, which gives your body the chance to rest and repair. That's absolutely true.

But if your body is compensating for an old injury, influenced by stress and tension, or adapting to the way you move every day...

A mattress, pillow or pair of insoles can't work out what's actually causing your pain.

And that's the part worth sitting with: the painful side is rarely the problem. It's often just where the compensation finally shows up.

A scan doesn't always tell the full story either

I remember desperately wanting a diagnosis because I wanted to feel heard. I wanted someone to tell me my pain was real.

Scans can be incredibly useful, but sometimes they don't always explain why you're in pain, why it keeps returning or why it only hurts during certain movements.

Your assessment at Strength & Soul starts long before you lie down on the treatment table. We're listening, looking, watching how you move, asking questions, and building the whole picture.

Only then can we start joining the dots, understanding what's really causing your pain and working out what your body needs.

If you've been buying gadgets hoping the next thing will finally be the one, you're definitely not alone.

And please don't feel silly if that's you. When you're in pain, you'll try almost anything if you think it might help.

But before you spend another few hundred pounds on another pillow, chair or gadget, ask yourself one question:

Has anyone actually taken the time to understand why I'm in pain?

You don't need another gadget. You need someone to ask why.

Love

Jo & Kev

Dear Reader The Countdown is On! Four weeks until the Nations Massage Tournament in Paris and honestly I don’t feel ready so this week I’m in preparation mode. We’ve had family visiting from Australia for the past few weeks so it's been full but lovely catching up. Last week I was writing press releases, blog posts, updating our Google listing, tidying up profiles so that if anyone does go looking for us, they can actually find us. Not the glamorous part of running a business, but it needs...

Dear Reader We've just had a weekend in Millport for my Dad's 70th. Paddleboarding, swimming, cycling, walking, we were outside nearly the whole time and everyone came home tired in a good way. The raft race was on, which was brilliant to watch, and we found a few fishing spots for my Dad. I needed it. I've been running on Basal for weeks while Kev had shingles, most likely below Basal, if I'm honest. This week is the first normal one I've had in a while, so I'm back to Tend. (If you missed...

Dear Reader Good afternoon, I hope everyone is enjoying this glorious sunshine! Kev and I were chatting this morning about our clients. I was telling him about a client who came in yesterday for her last session on the Hip & Back programme — she told me her back "went" recently, and for a second I felt so disappointed for her, my brain automatically trying to work out why. But as she explained it and she'd clearly thought it through, because she knew I'd ask lots of questions. I noticed she...
